Cybersecurity: One District's Cautionary Tale

  • Virtual Zoom Meeting United States (map)

Sumner County Schools experienced a cybersecurity incident on July 20, 2026, when unauthorized access to the district's computer network was discovered.  Local and federal authorities—including the FBI, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the Department of Homeland Security, and the Tennessee Department of Education—alongside third-party forensic specialists, launched an investigation and forensic audit.  The opening of the school year was delayed by 6 days. Sumner County had seemingly done everything that would be reasonably expected of a district. Superintendent Scott Langford will share what they learned during this ordeal and offer suggestions for how you can avoid a similar situation. You will not want to miss this one.
