Improving Literacy Through a Systemic Focus on Academic Vocabulary Instruction in Middle and High School - East

  • Sara Simpson Professional Development Technology Center 801 Tipton Ave Knoxville, TN 37920 (map)

The need for vocabulary instruction is especially acute in middle and high school. In the early years, children pick up words by listening to their parents, caregivers, and teachers speak, but researchers have found that by 4th and 5th grade, most students' vocabulary acquisition had stagnated. Much of this is because the words that students need to learn during Middle and High School are words that are not typically spoken, but rather used in written work. These academic vocabulary words are not heard in typical conversation.

Presented by TOSS Platinum Partner Vocabulary.com, this workshop will describe a number of techniques for implementing school- and district-wide vocabulary instruction that is closely tied to your curriculum. After this hands-on workshop, you will leave with an understanding of how to improve vocabulary district-wide with your current personnel, utilizing an award-winning research-backed resource that is currently being used by millions of students around the country.

ATTENDEES WILL RECEIVE 4 HOURS OF TASL CREDIT FOR THIS EVENT!
