Please join us on October 26, 2022 as Curriculum Associates brings us this discussion lead by Lloyd Jones and other guest presenters:
Understanding Student Learning: What, when, and how of achieving ‘on grade level’ achievement with all learners
Lead by Lloyd Jones, you will learn from a varied group of presenters around these topics:
Understanding Student Learning: The What/When/How
Districts across Tennessee are looking at ways to help accelerate student learning within grade level content. Using one of the largest K-8 data sets in the country, we will examine what we know about our students in math and reading, then discuss when things have worked through research proven practices, and finally determine next steps on how to move forward.
Building Systems for Productive Struggle
Research in the field of neuroplasticity tells us that our brains grow and form new pathways when we are engaging in tasks that are challenging for us. However, in our classroom environments, educators are focused more on the content than setting up the right systems for learning to occur. This session will incorporate research and practice in SHOWING how to create the right systems in classrooms that will result in productive learning environments for all students. Participants will learn frameworks in math and reading to help set up their classrooms for struggle and success.
Ears to the Ground but Eyes on Mathematics
Especially since the beginning of the standards movement in 1989, much research has been carried out on the importance of having high expectations for all students in our state’s mathematics classrooms. Math standards have been written and revised in Tennessee that set those high expectations for all learners. Unfortunately, many students come to class without the necessary skills base needed to engage with the high expectations of their grade-level standards. This session will explore three research-based approaches to holding all students to high expectations with supports for success: TN Resources for Understanding the Depth and Intent of the Tennessee Mathematics Standards, Just-in-Time Teaching, and Discourse-based Mathematical Instruction.
What it Takes to Read by 3rd Grade
Educators across the country are experiencing an invigorating focus on confirming crucial elements of teaching reading, the foundational skills. Many school districts have invested both time and dollars into gold standard Science of Reading training--which gets us halfway home. To propel our students all the way to successful comprehending, the research shows that explicit instruction in the foundational areas is the key to reading success by grade three. This session will examine the seven necessary foundational elements that will have students reading by grade three and successful for life.
Acceleration within the grade
Utilizing research-based materials, participants will experience how teachers can use a mathematics and reading prerequisite strategy to accelerate learning within grade level content.
