Impacting Reading Success by Building Knowledge - April 17, 2024 (8:30AM-12:30PM CST)

The Science of Reading refers to the extensive and ever-evolving body of research that indicates how to successfully teach children to read. Our friends at the Reading League say that instruction based on the Science of Reading “will elevate and transform every community, every nation, through the power of literacy.” In this session, we will explore how to effectively implement evidence-based reading practices through long-term change management. So many of you have requested training on the transition from early literacy to ‘highly effective’ readers, that we held our “first step” on November 1, 2023. We allowed the attendees to tell us exactly what “step two” should be, and without exception, you asked us to bring Dr. Karen Scoggins back and to discuss the impact building knowledge had on reading success. Karen Scoggins clearly understands that “Knowledge is Power! The more you and your teachers and students know, the faster they will learn. Attendees in this session will explore what the research tells us about “why” we must be building knowledge to aid in better reading comprehension, engagement, increased outcomes in other subjects, and equity. Understanding where these opportunities lie in our high-quality instructional materials and how best leverage them for better student outcomes will allow you to support your teachers, school programming, and student success.
