Making the Shift to Project Based Learning - September 13, 2022 (8:30AM-12:30PM CST)

Teaching with a problem-based mathematics curriculum, with instruction centered around compelling problems that student’s reason about to develop strong conceptual understanding can be beneficial for students. In this session, participants will learn the first steps teachers can choose to take with any math curriculum to make the subtle shifts, allowing them to see the differences in how their students develop deep mathematical sills and understanding right away.

Participants will learn specific steps to take and tools to use to begin to shift to a fully engaging problem-based learning environment in their classrooms, and how to transfer the responsibility for the learning to students so that the student develops the deeper understanding needed for today’s standards. This session is for school and district leaders, but it will support your knowledge base so that you can recognize this strategy in your own mathematics teacher’s classrooms. Learning sessions during this event will include a modeled student-centered activity to see direct learning used in a classroom; a review of the ‘why’ for project-based learning; and ideas around the plan needed to ‘shift’ your school and community’s focus to this productive strategy. Join us as Jenn Miller presents on this topic.
