Physical, Mental and Personal Wellbeing of Students: Creating a Safe Secure Environment

School safety is the number one concern of many parents, teachers, and staff members. School violence and the changes that can take place in a system or school when school safety and security means ‘building strong relationships’. School threat assessment is a proactive and flexible violence prevention practice that is used when an individual threatens to commit a violent act or engages in threatening behavior. Threat assessment includes the identification, assessment, and management of threats with the goal of resolving conflicts or problems before they escalate into violence.

Session Previews:
Day 1 - Dr. Wanda Shelton, TOSS ALI Executive Director, will lead this day’s discussion. She will be joined across the state with current practitioners who will discuss ACES, Trauma Informed Leadership, Crisis Teams, and School Culture. Most of you have a high quality security plan. These meetings will focus on how we can create a safe building when we are all return to ‘in person’ education, and how we can address trauma now. Let’s come together to learn how to work that plan and build strong relationships. The focus will move from “school safety’ to ‘student safety’, with our team looking closely at hazing, bullying, suicide prevention, and relationship building.
Day 2 - Dr. Dewey G. Cornell, clinical psychologist and Virgil Ward Chair as the Professor of Education in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia and the Director of the UVA Youth Violence Project, will discuss the proactive role of school threat assessment and the impact of the pandemic on the mental wellbeing of today’s students. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of a school threat assessment program, the types of concerning behaviors staff should be mindful of and the long term benefits of implementing such a program in your district.
